femoral artery: body AS copy machine:?

Please solve the following SAT analogy:

your femoral artery:your body
as
copy machine: is to what?

the answer: a school!

not having a copy machine makes things strongly difficult I must say. maybe the problem is we haven't given a proper name to our copy machine, so that's why it keeps malfunctioning and making horrible noises. What about:
Delilah?
Raquel?
Ernie?
Fred?
Boomer?

Any of those names suffice?

conflict in church...why?

An observation: our present day "church" has much conflict. I'm referring to the state of the church in America, which I am more familiar with than any church that may exist in the rest of the world. I will point out that the church DOES exist in the US, and it doesn't really exist at all in other places of the world, so at least it's there (which is a horrible line to end on, so I'm not going to). I also pre-apologize in advance for any generalities, ignorance, or offensive remarks that come across - this is not meant to be that at all, I just want to see church conflict solved or reduced, so maybe these words can be constructive in doing so.

So I'm going to ask why? is there conflict, knowing that there could be a million reasons given, and most of them, and a combination of them are valid. The reason I ask is that having talked to 2 good friends in the span of 2 days, they are both closely involved either personally or have a close family member experiencing church conflict. I get a strong sense of frustration, anger, and some hurt from both these friends when they talk about the conflict. I don't blame them. I've experienced similar feelings from the church in the US. I also understand that it's unfair to say "the church" and include everything that goes on throughout the million different denominations that congregate and fellowship together, thus being a church. There are alot of churches who I think ARE getting it right, which is encouraging to the others that are not.

From my understanding of what church is meant to be, the state of the church has alot of things backwards nowadays. I think the church was intended to be a collection of individuals who serve the body. Nowadays I think individuals think the body is there to serve them.

I think a main problem boils down to selfishness and pride, in that order. Individuals are selfish in their desires or opinions and then are prideful in not letting go/reconciling that desire/opinion. People are so strong in their mindset with things! I'm the first one to admit I'm the same way. I think I know how something should be done, or the way something should be in life. Honestly, how ridiculous. Any sense of understanding my place in the universe, and that mentality of me knowing how something should be is dumb. Like big dumb animals. Just plain dumb.

I believe Jesus got everything right while He lived on this earth, without fail. In looking at his example, how did he respond to questions posed to Him where He could reveal His opinion or thought of something? For certain things, of course He presented a firm answer. Black and White. You should do this or not do this according to the Laws of God. Many times, however, he answered a question or said something in a way that left the possibility that He may not be correct with what He was saying. Look into Scripture. Read some of His interactions with His disciples and the people who challenged Him and what He was saying. "Believe it for yourself if you see it fit, otherwise, believe what you know to be true" is the way Jesus often said things. But of course, His words were the correct ones. My point here is the way Jesus delivered His words and opinions.

So that process still goes on today in modern church, and people join in groups because they understand something to be true, and pit themselves against other groups who understand something to be true, but neither one is necessarily True. And then lots of conflict results. In no way do I have a solution to anything, but my suggestion is to be more like Jesus. Alot easier said than done, I know. For individuals to allow themselves to be humble, for individuals to say "maybe I'm not right on that issue" or "maybe I should get together with a someone outside of my group and see what his/her interpretation of Scripture on this issue is...

So I'm asking something very difficult...how do we get people around us to be more humble? I should probably start with me first...

19-10

My prediction for the Deacs this year is 19-10 for the regular season. Which will bubblize us come tourny time in March. Air Force should be an interesting game ?? Meaning, DePaul should be our most challenging non-conference road game. And no ACC/Big 10 challenge game? Too few teams for Wake Forest to match up against one of them? NEWS FLASH -- Air Force is good, they'll be on the bubble, part of the "next four out" according to Joe Lunardi of ESPN...

HOW THE HECK HAVE YOU PICKED ANYTHING YET MR. LUNARDI and WE HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED SCHOOL YET? YOU have Robert Morris as the 16th seed in the San Antonio region!!! What the heck are you thinking?? It's soooooo going to be the Elon Phoenix. Duh!!!

Anyways, so this schedule is different from prior years. I don't think it's as tough earlier, but come ACC, of course it's going to get hard. I think it's smart to have a chance at more wins and not beat ourselves up before ACC play begins. It is delightful that we'll only play coach K once this year, lessening the amount of cussing and frustration Wake Forest fans endure...

GO DEACS!!

funny things said...

So far, I've accumulated some funny things people have said to me while in Argentina. For example:

-(talking to an elderly lady in front of the supermarket): "well, my dear, I'm 86.....[the conversation continues for a bit]...no! wait, I'm 82!

-fellow teacher James, who is wonderfully married with a super family in passing says:
"so are you going to go get something from the hot lunch lady today?" what he really meant (and he really did) is: "are you going to get a hot lunch from the lunch lady today?"

-one of my students who's main language is Spanish while taking a test:
"ah, Mr. Schimlliff, can I take out a rubber?" (he totally meant eraser, "goma" means both eraser and rubber (the bouncy material, not the, well, you get it)

this past weekend...

So cool. I was able to fly to Denver for Eric and now, Jenny Marable's wedding. And I got to hang out with great Normandy friends from Dallas for the duration of the weekend. It was quite a whirlwind, and a wonderful wedding. Weddings, I've come to understand, are simply joyous, wonderful times. This was no exception. Everything seems to be going right at weddings. Anyways, Denver had really good weather, and I was able to enjoy a couple of big bowls of cereal. Also, I was able to stock up on some cereal for the return trip (8 boxes). It wasn't a problem getting these through Argentine customs, they only really stop you if you have new electronics, drugs or more than 10.000 dollars on your person. It was a really great weekend, and I'm very glad I was able to take part. Here are a couple of photos from the wedding:
Above is wedding party at the church and a view from a balcony at the reception. Oh Colorado...but for Eric and Jenny - enjoy your honeymoon!!

This is what I got to see this morning...
1. How can one not believe in beauty?
2. Can you claim to understand beauty?
3. My answer to number #2 is NO. Then what do we call that unability?
4. Grace?

dulce de leche whole grain oatmeal raisin cookies

In light of recent really good food I've been eating (thank you Sarah, Rosa, Mariah, Josefina, Debbie, Joanna, Naomi) I felt inspired to do something a little unique. So this morning I made some dulce de leche whole grain oatmeal raisin cookies. That's a mouthful, haha, get it...a mouthful? Right. So the recipe:

1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup butter
1 egg
1 cup milk
1/3 cup dulce de leche
1 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
3 teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups oats (instant or regular)

1 cup raisins

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Cream together butter & brown sugar. Add egg and vanilla.

2. In a small saucepan over low heat, add milk and dulce de leche together, and stir, to help dissolve dulce de leche. Not much time is needed.

3.
Add in mixture from step #1 to dulce de leche/milk mixture. Stir well.
4. In a separate bowl, sift in flower, add baking powder, cinnamon, oats, and nutmeg. Stir and blend ingredients well. Add in raisins.
5. Pour liquid mixture from step #3 into dry mixture. Stir well.
6. Use a non-stick pan or lightly butter a cookie tray & use a tablespoon to drop cookie mixture onto pan, leaving 3/2 inches in between each cookie. (that's my math humor - 3/2)
7. Bake in oven set to 350 F for 8-9 minutes or until edges are light golden brown.

the first day...and laying it down

The first day went off without any problems, embarrassments, or major goofs. We had a 1/2 day assembly where we had praise and worship as an entire school, I met with the class I'm sponsoring (Seniors), we handed out schedules, talked about electives, introduced all us teachers, and went over the rules.

When Dana (who is our principal) was finished explaining the no cell phone, i-pod rule, I quietly raised my hand in the back, and when called on, stated, "if a cell phone rings in my class, you can count on me taking it and throwing it in the trash." Then there were some gasps and "uhhhs" from the students. I guess I'm just a cell phonbiac.

It was really good today, and nearly every student I met seemed to be respectful and kind, some of course were timid and shy, others a little more gung-ho, but myself and some other teachers are already under the impression that we're going to be teaching some great kids...

classes and class

We just arrived back from a new/old teacher retreat, where we finalized some things, and had some good time getting to know each other (all us teachers). For this semester, I'm going to be teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Pre-calculus, and 2 electives, that are still to be determined. I will have 7th graders through 12th graders. I figure this is a good mix of immature, mature, "what's-this-puberty-thing?", "ahhhhhhhh!!!!!", "I'm-so-far-past-puberty kids", and kids who will be just fine. I say "kids", but it's funny, cause I've met one of my seniors already, and he looks older than me.

Also, I'm going to be the Senior Class sponsor this year, so I've got 7 cool kids who I'm excited to meet and help out.

School starts tomorrow. Say what?
